The so-called “security package”, which was introduced in the Bundestag by the SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens and FDP factions, threatens to permanently undermine social cohesion and our understanding of humanity.
What was declared as a security package against extremism and terrorism is developing into a blanket general suspicion against people with a migration background, massive cuts in everyone’s basic rights, and leading to a humanitarian emergency.
The social discourse, which has been heated up by right-wing extremist actors over the years, has moved away from security issues and created an atmosphere of exclusion, fear and security.
It is fatal when democratic parties emulate right-wing extremist reflexes and respond to security challenges such as the Islamist attack in Solingen with more restrictive policies against refugees. This paradigm shift must be stopped.
We strongly condemn the Islamist attack in Solingen. This event once again highlights the danger posed by both religious extremism in general and Islamist fanaticism in particular. It is the task of democratic governments to provide effective and targeted responses to this danger, such as prevention measures, exit and de-radicalization programs, instead of following dehumanizing pseudo-solutions.
We, a broad alliance of democratic civil society, therefore demand a policy that is based on solidarity, dignity and humanity. Security can only be created through strong cooperation, through education and participation, through the protection of human rights and through trust. A society that tramples on human rights loses its stability and security in the long term.
We need policies that protect all people and preserve the integrity of humanity.
Human dignity is inviolable and must not be sacrificed for right-wing populist narratives or political opportunism. That’s why we say just as loudly and clearly: No to the security package. No to tightening asylum laws. No to right-wing populist legislation without effect.
Now is the moment to stand up together for a humane, fair and inclusive society – before it is too late.
Emergency Humanity is an alliance project of:
